If I asked you where I could get the best tasting burger in your town, where would you send me?

Think for a minute about biting into the best hamburger you’ve ever had…. where was it?

I’d be willing to bet that it wasn’t from McDonald’s.

So, if McDonald’s doesn’t serve the best tasting hamburgers, then why are they the world’s largest, and most successful, hamburger chain?

I believe there are 5 primary principles that McDonald’s follows that overwhelmingly contribute to their tremendous success. And all 5 of them can be implemented in your business.

Lesson #1 – Consistently Deliver

McDonald’s is the undisputed master of delivering the same “good” tasting food day in and day out.  It doesn’t matter if you order a Big Mac in Seattle or Syracuse, it’s gonna taste the same.  This is possible due to their operational efficiency.

Lesson #2 – Focus on Being Operationally Efficient

McDonald’s has operational procedures for everything from cooking french fries to giving customers their change.  It’s their attention to systems and procedures that enables them to consistently deliver.  Having the right equipment and the proper equipment layout is part of their efficiency.

Lesson #3 – Utilize the Right Equipment (in the Right Places)

Not only does McDonald’s have the best equipment for each task, but they also have done studies to insure the equipment is strategically located.  It’s this attention to detail that contributes to their operational efficiency.  Not only do they have the right equipment in the right places, but they also consistently train their employees to use the equipment.

Lesson #4 – Constantly & Continuously Train

It doesn’t matter if you’re in Florida or Nebraska, if you are hired by McDonald’s you’re going to go through the same training process.  Employees are cross-trained on several different operational areas of work.

Lesson #5 – Be True to Yourself

McDonald’s knows they don’t sell the best tasting hamburgers in the world… and they don’t care.  They know where their strengths lie (operational efficiency, consistency), and they embrace and nurture them.

  1. The best burger-style meal in my town (Rolla, MO) is from our Maid-Rite (crumbly hamburger–not in a “burger”format).
