How Changing Lives Can Grow Your Business

What’s the point of growing your business? More revenue? More accolades? More profit?

Have you ever stepped back and examined your true motives?

As an American, it’s virtually a given that you start a business to grow it, make a lot of money, and retire rich.

Why else would anyone want to suffer through all the uncertainty, risk, stress, sleepless nights…and did I mention stress?

Let me ask again, “Why start and run your own business?”

My challenge to you is to shift the reason for starting and running your business.

Imagine for a minute that the only purpose for starting and running your business is to make a difference in the lives of your customers.

What if your goal was simply to change the lives of those you interact with. To leave these people in a better place than when you first interacted with them.

I know what you’re thinking, “Yeah but you don’t understand what type of business I’m in.” Or, “You don’t understand my background.”

I’m not sure what organization you’re a part of (or what type of organization you’re going to start), but it probably doesn’t smell as bad as a fish market. When John Yokoyama purchased Pikes Place Fish Market back in 1965 it wasn’t world famous. However, by placing the needs of their customers above their own, they have become world famous.

It’s the small actions that most people overlook that make the biggest impact.

A little girl was enjoying an early morning walk on the beach with her grandpa.

Her grandpa kept picking up the occasional starfish that the tide had deposited on the sand and throwing it back into the ocean.

The little girl eventually grew tired of having to stop and wait for her grandpa to pick up and throw the starfish back.

She stated, “Grandpa, there are thousands of starfish washed up on the shore each night. What difference will you make throwing these few back?”

Her grandpa didn’t immediately respond; instead he waited until he found another starfish needing to be saved.  He gently bent down, picked up the starfish and tossed it back and said, “For this starfish it makes all the difference in the world.”

Do the little things, make a difference…change someone’s life today.
